After several years of evaluating container technologies, Unicorn Research Ltd. (Representative Director: Takahiro Chuma) has built and migrated its web service development environment to an end-to-end open-source technology stack.
Features of the Development Environment
- Standardized the web application runtime environment on Kubernetes, the de facto standard for container environments, ensuring continuity with the production environment after release
- Adopted Debian-based Linux for the host OS, container images, and client OS, expanding the scope for Infrastructure as Code primarily through the development of bash scripts
- Utilized Google Cloud Platform preemptible VMs for development machines, continuing to evaluate infrastructure with limited continuity guarantees
- Adopted open-source middleware, including PostgreSQL, for storage and various DBMS components
- Adopted VS Code as the development editor, reducing dependence on specific hardware and increasing flexibility in infrastructure selection according to required service levels
Purpose of the Migration
From the perspective of continuity of procurement, open source has the distinctive advantage that there is no need to revert once it has been adopted. As peace and economic conditions become increasingly volatile, confidence that what is possible today will remain possible in the future has become less certain, making the sustainability of the software layer increasingly important.
At the same time, the hardware layer continues to undergo a major shift with the spread of ARM platforms originating in smart devices. From the perspective of platform evolution over the coming decades, we concluded that Linux and Kubernetes should be treated as our primary platforms.

開発環境の特徴

移行の目的
調達継続性の観点で、オープンソースには後戻りすることがないという特長があります。平和と経済環境が激動するなか、今日可能であることが将来的にも可能であることへの確信は不透明さを増しており、ソフトウェアレイヤの持続性は重要性を増しています。
また、スマートデバイス発のARMプラットフォーム普及というハードウェア層の潮流変化も続いており、今後数十年スパンのプラットフォームの進化の観点でも、Linuxやkubernetesをプライマリとすべきであろうと判断しました。
